Today, all of us are celebrating the national festival of Independence Day with immense enthusiasm. The tricolor is unfurled atop every home, patriotic songs echo, and an atmosphere of celebration is all around. Yet, amidst this formal celebration, a fundamental question arises: Does hoisting the flag and celebrating constitute the true meaning of freedom? This is a grave matter that demands deep reflection.
A long time has passed since the nation gained political independence, but if we impartially evaluate the real condition of our society, several bitter truths emerge:
The Compulsion of Hunger and Poverty: Even today, a large segment of society is forced to stretch out their hands for primary necessities like food. In a nation where citizens struggle for two square meals a day, the claim of complete freedom remains incomplete.
The Commercialization of Education: Education has ceased to be a fundamental right and has become dependent on an individual's financial capacity. Access to quality education is now determined by how much one can afford to spend on it. Due to economic disparity, talent remains deprived of opportunities.
Social Discrimination and Prejudice: The transgender community remains far removed from basic civil liberties and social acceptance even today. Society's language, attitude, and conduct toward them continue to be rooted in inequality. Isolating any group based on their identity is a hallmark of social subjugation.
Barriers to Novelty and Innovation: New ideas and innovations are still not readily embraced by society. Many people are prevented from pursuing something new simply because a traditional mindset views new experiments with suspicion, even when they are useful for societal progress.
Slogans such as “My country is changing, moving forward” sound appealing, and certain development figures do reflect progress. However, the ground reality is that a significant portion of the population is still deprived of food, clothing, shelter, basic education, and adequate means of livelihood. Assuming that we are free merely by celebrating sovereignty amidst economic and social deprivations is turning a blind eye to reality. While we broke free from colonial rule, we remain shackled by a narrow social mindset and economic inequality.
Genuine freedom will only be meaningful when basic amenities reach every citizen of the country without discrimination. In the true sense, freedom will be realized on the day an ordinary family's parents do not have to postpone their child's education or essential needs due to a lack of money.
Nation-building is achieved not merely through symbols, but by providing economic, social, and intellectual security to every citizen.
Wishing you all a very Happy Independence Day.
